THE WOMAN: STORIES OF NATION BUILDERS

THE WOMAN: A Television Initiative by TAHRIFF in Collaboration with SumTV

Introduction : The Positive Role of Women in Solving Societal Challenges and Driving Community Development

Background

Across the globe, women have consistently played pivotal roles in addressing societal challenges and fostering sustainable community development. In Nigeria, and particularly in Taraba State, women’s leadership, resilience, and creativity have been central to peacebuilding, human rights advocacy, economic empowerment, cultural preservation, and social cohesion. However, these contributions are often underrepresented in mainstream media, leaving a gap in awareness, recognition, and policy support.

This initiative seeks to bridge that gap by leveraging the platform of television storytelling—bringing to light inspiring narratives of women whose actions are shaping better communities and influencing societal transformation.

Rationale

The Taraba Human Rights International Film Festival (TAHRIFF), with its focus on restoring human dignity and projecting indigenous creativity, recognizes the urgency of showcasing women’s contributions as both a matter of justice and a catalyst for social change. Collaborating with SumTV, a reputable media platform known for advocacy and humanitarian storytelling, will ensure that these stories are captured authentically and broadcast widely.

Through this program, viewers will see women not merely as beneficiaries of development but as leaders, problem-solvers, and agents of change in diverse sectors.

Objectives

  1. Highlight Women’s Impact: Showcase the tangible contributions of women in peacebuilding, education, health, entrepreneurship, governance, and human rights.
  2. Promote Gender Equality: Challenge stereotypes by portraying women as central actors in societal problem-solving.
  3. Inspire Action: Motivate communities, policymakers, and young people to support women-led initiatives.
  4. Preserve Indigenous Narratives: Document the culturally rooted approaches women use to address community challenges.
